Under the overarching theme, “Gifted, Needed and Treasured”, Sister Beverly Supersaad-Griffin led the Zion Seventh-day Adventist Church (Sandy Point) congregation in observing April as a very special month, highlighting Adventist Possibilities Ministries.
While April 17 had been the designated day for Possibilities Ministries, Sister Supersaad-Griffin felt that an entire month would do more to sensitize the congregation to the challenges of the differently abled. Each week’s special feature began and ended with the song “I am a Promise”. The colours for the areas highlighted each week came alive in outfits, shoes, ties, and even masks.
An informative, interactive session on autism started off the special presentations. Week Two looked at widows, caregivers, and the hearing-impaired. Special presentations were made by individuals within these categories. By the final week, several members were geared to participate in the challenge to “Walk a Mile in My Shoes”.
For the official awareness day, the entire morning focused on disabilities. Some highlights were video presentations, drama and an interactive sermon. These all came together to create a memorable month of awareness. While the Church looks to the second advent of Christ, when man will be restored to his original image, it is better positioned to view and treat disabled persons as they really are, “Gifted, Needed, and Treasured”.
